Powered by Google Gemini, they pull information from across the web to answer a query directly on the results page. Sources that contribute to the summary are shown as citations, giving those websites visibility without requiring a user to click through.

Why It Matters for Small Businesses

AI Overviews now appear on a significant portion of Google searches and they sit above everything else on the page. If your competitor content is being cited in an AI Overview and yours is not, they are getting top-of-page visibility you are not.
