The Complete
AI Visibility Audit

A comprehensive audit checklist organized across all eight Firefly Framework pillars. Use this to identify exactly where your business is invisible to AI systems, which gaps carry the highest business cost, and where to start the fix.

Authority & Integration Audit Checklist Firefly Web Labs · 2025
How to Use This Audit

Work through each pillar section below. For every item, mark it as complete, partial, or missing. Items marked missing are your remediation targets — the gaps that are actively reducing your AI recommendation confidence. Prioritize gaps in earlier pillars (Recognition, Understanding, Discovery) before addressing later pillars (Authority, Citation), because later-pillar improvements deliver less value when earlier-pillar foundations are incomplete.

This audit is designed for self-assessment. For a scored, benchmarked assessment with competitive comparison and prioritized remediation plan, the Firefly site audit applies the same framework with Faeth data and market context.

Eight-Pillar Audit

The Complete Checklist

01
Recognition
Can AI systems correctly identify your business as a distinct entity?
Your business name is identical across your website, GBP, and all major directories — including capitalization and punctuation
Your business has a single, primary GBP listing — no duplicates or unclaimed profiles exist for your address
Your business phone number is consistent in format across all platforms (e.g., +1-949-555-0100 vs 949.555.0100)
Your street address is formatted identically everywhere — including suite number formatting, abbreviations (St. vs Street), and zip code
When you search for your business name in ChatGPT, it correctly identifies your business type and location
Your business name is distinctive enough to be recognized as a unique entity (not easily confused with competitors or chains)
02
Understanding
Can AI systems determine what you do, who you serve, and where you operate?
Every service you offer has its own named description — not bundled under a generic "services" label
Your GBP primary category uses the most specific available category for your business type
Your GBP description names specific services — not generic phrases like "comprehensive solutions" or "full-service provider"
Your website clearly answers: what you do, who you serve, and where you operate — above the fold on the homepage
When you ask ChatGPT to describe your business, the description is accurate and specific — not vague or incorrect
Your geographic service area is named explicitly — specific cities, not just "serving the greater metro area"
03
Trust
Do credible external signals support your business's claims?
Your GBP is verified by Google and shows a verified badge
You have a BBB profile that is current and accurate (accreditation preferred)
Applicable license or regulatory listings (state contractor license, state bar, NPI, FINRA) match your website identity exactly
You have 10+ Google reviews with an average rating of 4.0 or above
At least some reviews mention specific services, outcomes, or locations — not just general satisfaction
Your website has an About page with founding date, team information, and business history
04
Authority
Does the wider web reinforce your expertise and relevance?
Your business is listed in the primary industry directories for your sector (Avvo for legal, Healthgrades for medical, Angi for contractors, etc.)
You are a member of and listed in your local Chamber of Commerce directory
You have received at least one local media mention (news article, community feature, or local blog reference) in the past 2 years
Your website has original content that demonstrates expertise (articles, guides, or resources that only your business could have produced)
Individual team members or practitioners have named credentials publicly verifiable (LinkedIn, credential board directories)
Your business has a LinkedIn company page that is complete and regularly updated
05
Discovery
Can AI systems access and interpret your information correctly?
Your website is crawlable — no robots.txt blocks that prevent AI crawlers from accessing key pages
You have implemented LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema with name, address, phone, geo coordinates, and hours
Your schema includes a hasOfferCatalog with every service individually named
Your schema includes an areaServed property naming every city you serve
Your schema includes a sameAs property linking to your GBP, LinkedIn, BBB, and major directory profiles
Schema validates without errors in Google's Rich Results Test
06
Citation
Does your business provide information strong enough for AI to reference?
Perplexity returns your business in response to at least one category + city query relevant to your business
When Perplexity returns competitors instead of you, you have identified the citation sources it drew from and assessed whether you are listed there
Your website contains citable, specific information — founding date, team size, years of experience, service specifics — that AI could reference accurately
Your external directory profiles contain consistent, detailed descriptions rather than minimal or placeholder content
You have at least one local citation from a non-aggregator source — a local news article, community organization, or association website
07
Recommendation
Do the combined signals create enough confidence for AI to recommend you?
ChatGPT mentions your business in response to at least one service + city query you tested
Gemini includes your business in local service recommendation answers for your primary market
When AI systems do mention your business, the description is accurate and favorable — not incorrect, outdated, or missing key attributes
You have tested at least 10 different query variations across at least 3 AI platforms
Your Citation Share (% of tested queries where you appear) is higher than it was 90 days ago
08
Measurement
Can you track visibility, citations, gaps, and progress over time?
You have a documented query set (15–25 test queries) for regular AI visibility testing
You have recorded a baseline score for Recognition Rate, Citation Share, and Description Accuracy
You have a scheduled re-test date within the next 60–90 days
You are tracking whether specific infrastructure improvements are producing measurable visibility changes
You have identified your three highest-priority remediation actions based on this audit
After Completing the Audit

Count missing items by pillar. The pillar with the most missing items is your highest-priority remediation target — with one exception: if Pillar 1 (Recognition) has any missing items, address those first regardless of counts. Entity ambiguity at the Recognition level suppresses the value of improvements in every other pillar.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI Visibility Audit — Common Questions

How long does this audit take to complete?

The checklist review itself takes 30–60 minutes for someone familiar with their business's online presence. The AI platform testing component — running the recommended queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude — adds another 60–90 minutes. Total time investment for a thorough self-audit is 2–3 hours. Businesses with complex multi-location or multi-practitioner situations may require more time to assess NAP consistency and directory presence across all entities.

Should I complete this audit myself or hire someone?

Self-auditing against this checklist is a valuable starting point that gives you a qualitative sense of where your gaps are. The limitation is that self-auditing cannot provide competitive context — you cannot know whether your Citation Share is competitive without testing competitors in the same query set, or whether your pillar scores are above or below market norms without benchmark data. The Firefly site audit provides scored pillar assessments, competitive Citation Share comparison, Faeth-powered analysis, and a prioritized remediation plan — outputs that a self-audit cannot produce.

What score should I aim for?

Completing every item in Pillars 1–5 (Recognition through Discovery) is the minimum foundation for meaningful AI recommendation presence. Pillar 1 and 5 (Recognition and Discovery) items are particularly binary — missing items in these pillars actively suppress AI visibility in ways that partial completion of later pillars cannot compensate for. Treat Pillars 1 and 5 as must-complete before focusing on Pillars 3 and 4 (Trust and Authority), which build on top of a solid foundation.
