What is Zero-Click Search?

Zero-click search occurs when a user's query is answered directly on the search results page — or in an AI-generated response — without the user clicking through to any website.

Definition

Zero-click search occurs when a user's query is fully answered within the search results page or AI-generated response — so the user never clicks through to a website. This happens through featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, and direct AI answers. As AI search becomes dominant, zero-click rates increase — meaning businesses need visibility within those answers, not just as a link below them.

Why It Matters for Small Businesses

Zero-click doesn't mean zero value. When an AI system answers a query by naming your business, recommending your services, or citing your content — even without a click — it has shaped the user's perception. Brand recognition, trust, and recall all increase. The goal is not just to earn clicks but to earn mentions and citations in the answers people receive, whether they click or not.

Example

A user asks Google "What are the best questions to ask a landscaper before hiring?" Google's AI Overview answers the question in full — and cites a landscaping company's blog post in its response. The user doesn't click, but they see the company's name associated with expert advice. When they're ready to hire, that company is top of mind.
